BOOK OF THE DAY:

The Meursault Investigation by Kamel Daoud

“[A] retelling of Albert Camus’s classic The Stranger from an Algerian perspective…[this] debut novel reaped glowing international reviews, literary honors, and then, suddenly, demands for [Daoud’s] public execution.” —New York Times

This is definitely a contemporary and intelligent gift for Albert Camus fans. The brother of “the Arab,” who was murdered by the antihero of Camus’ classic novel The Stranger is now being avenged by his brother Harun. He refuses to let Musa’s name and history become a mere anonymous memory. Harun gives Musa back his name and recounts the events that led to his brother’s death on the sunny beach.

“I’ll tell you this up front: The other dead man, the murder victim, was my brother. There’s nothing left of him. There’s only me, left to speak in his place, sitting in this bar, waiting for condolences no one’s ever going to offer.”

A criticism and extension of Camus’ highly coveted novel, Kamel Daoud explores Arab identity as well as the devastating effects of colonialism in Algeria. Although The Meursault Investigation seems like an experiment, it holds its ground. It’s a beautiful piece of work, which should be explored by all that have read The Stranger.
